Le Rime Arezzo

Lucignano village

Lucignano is located at 25 ‘by car from Le Rime: The geographical location of Lucignano, in a dominant position between Siena and Arezzo, has made it strategically important since ancient times and, in the 1500, determined the continuous jurisdictional passages between Siena, Arezzo, Florence and Perugia.

The small village of Lucignano is one of the most extraordinary examples of medieval town planning , due to its elliptical shape with concentric rings, which has been intact over the centuries. Walking through the narrow streets lined with stone and brick houses, you reach the heart of the village in the upper area: the Court Square, which overlooks the Palazzo Comunale, the Church of S. Francesco and the Collegiata. Inside the thirteenth-century Palazzo Comunale is the Museum, guardian of the treasures of the town: works of art of the Middle Ages and the Tuscan Renaissance, among which stands out the magnificent Golden Tree .

Its impressive dimensions (it is 2.60 meters tall) and the richness of decoration (corals, crystals, miniatures on parchment …) make it an attraction for tourists from all over the world. The Tree is exhibited inside the Hall of Audiences, where there is also a cycle of frescoes dedicated to illustrious Men, commissioned by the chancellors and priors of Lucignano in the fifteenth century.

Next to the municipal building stands the Franciscan complex dating back to the XIII century and consisting of a church and a monastery. The church, with a gabled structure, has a Gothic style façade, with horizontal bands of sandstone and travertine, of clear Sienese influence, with an imposing travertine portal and a sandstone rose window. The interior of the church houses a cycle of frescoes of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, focusing on the life of St. Francis, whose most famous image is the scene of the Triumph of Death painted by Bartolo di Fredi.

The main church of Lucignano is however the 16th century Collegiata, which is located at the opposite end of the square and is faced by a beautiful travertine staircase designed by the Jesuit Father Andrea Pozzo, which incorporates the ellipsoidal design of the structure of the country.

In May, the village is colored and perfumed with the flowers of Maggiolata, a village festival that recalls the ancient rural celebrations for the arrival of summer. The four districts of the village each year build wagons entirely covered with flowers that parade through the streets of the village accompanied by farm carts and folk groups.
